Agile product development in sustainable heating and air conditioning technology

To significantly increase time-to-market and innovative strength, a global technology leader in heat pumps and air conditioning solutions has converted its development organization to scaled agility. Value stream-oriented structures create transparency, focus, and faster value creation.

The customer

A leading international provider of heating and air conditioning solutions with around 18,000 employees has been developing sustainable and energy-efficient technologies for many years – from electric heat pumps and intelligent system solutions to comprehensive services. The company is thus making a significant contribution to the successful energy transition in the building sector.

To further accelerate product development and organize it more closely along value streams, the company has introduced scaled agile methods.

The KEGON solution

We were able to provide targeted support during this transformation process:

  • Leading SAFe® training for around 50 employees as the basis for a uniform, scaled agile working method.
  • SAFe® for Hardware training for around 20 middle management development executives to teach agile hardware development and lean portfolio approaches in a practical way.
  • Establishment of a SAFe® system team with modern DevOps practices to significantly reduce integration times, including temporary support as Scrum Master and DevOps Coach.
  • Optimization of Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and further development of team structures, including the introduction of cyber security champions and integration of hardware-related value-added areas.
  • Strengthening architecture work by establishing the role of “Solution Architect” with end-to-end responsibility for technical enablers.
  • Coaching central SAFe® roles such as Solution Architect, Solution Management, and Solution Train Engineer, as well as close coordination with line management and business owners.
  • Supporting an ART as RTE to ensure an effective and sustainably scalable agile setup.
  • Introducing uniform prioritization using WSJF to balance customer benefits and enabler requirements.
  • Systematic analysis and optimization of the DevOps pipeline, identification of bottlenecks, and establishment of a continuous improvement process including relevant KPIs.

Results

These measures have led to lasting improvements in collaboration, integration speed, and time to market within the company.
